It was only 23 years ago today that homosexuality was removed from the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Classification of Diseases.

Today, on the International Day Against Homophobia, New Democrats are proud to stand in solidarity with the LGBT(Q) community here at home and abroad as we renew our commitment to speaking out against discrimination, prejudice and violence.

On behalf of the New Democratic Party of Canada, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the family of Elijah Harper; his wife Anita Olsen Harper, his children Bruce and Holly, and his step-children Karen, Dylan, Gaylen and Grant.

OTTAWA – New Democrat Labour Critic Alexandre Boulerice has issued the following statement on International Workers’ Day:

“Happy International Workers’ Day. New Democrats join workers the world over to mark International Workers’ Day today.

Every May 1st, the world remembers the four lives that were lost in 1886, as workers in Chicago fought for the eight-hour workday. International Workers’ Day reminds us that the labour rights we cherish today were hard-won battles by generations of union activists.

Earth Day is an opportunity for Canadians to take action to preserve our planet and to demand action from governments.

Each of us has the power to make changes and collectively we can have a significant, positive impact on our environment.

New Democrats say the Conservative government must provide long term assistance to Aboriginal communities like the Neskantaga First Nation, in North Western Ontario, which declared a state of emergency following a recent wave of suicides.

This call for help comes after a second suicide in the space of barely two weeks. Last year alone, the community of 421 was hit by four suicides, seven sudden deaths and over twenty attempted suicides.
