To Whom It May Concern:

RE: CBC/Radio-Canada license renewal consultation notice

As Member of Parliament for Toronto-Danforth, many people from all over my riding have shared their concerns with me over the future of CBC/Radio-Canada. I’d like to take this opportunity to relay these concerns to you, as you prepare for consultations on the renewal of the CBC’s licenses.

OTTAWA — The Conservative government must stop the Canada Mortgage and Housing Cooperation (CMHC) from imposing harsh penalties on cooperatives that are renegotiating their loan, said New Democrat Housing critic Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet (Hochelaga), today on World Habitat Day.

“The Conservative government is showing it's consistency for taking from the poor,” said Boutin-Sweet. "It reduces funding for social housing, and it keeps cooperatives under the authority of the CMHC by subjecting them to excessive penalties.”

Today, the Conservatives ended nearly a decade of unnecessary delays and allowed Omar Khadr to serve out the remainder of his sentence in Canada. Canada is the last Western country to repatriate their citizens from the discredited Guantanamo prison system.

Mr. Khadr's return to Canada was inevitable, yet the Conservatives chose to drag this process out for years at great cost to taxpayers. Their mishandling has hurt our relationship with the United States, our closest ally, and tarnished Canada's reputation on the international stage.

New Democrats to engage Canadians in a discussion on how to make our healthcare system sustainable for generations to come

OTTAWA – Fifty years ago, the party of Tommy Douglas brought Medicare to Canada. Today, the New Democrats remain committed to showing the same leadership and ensuring the sustainability of Canada’s healthcare system. That is why the NDP is organizing public consultations on the future of free, universal healthcare in our country.

Canada’s Democracy Week (September 15–22, 2012) celebrates Canada’s democracy and promotes the importance of civic education and voting. It supports the United Nations’ International Day of Democracy on September 15.

The National Youth Challenge invites young Canadians aged 14–30 to submit an image, video, blog post or tweet in response to the question “What are you doing for your democracy?”
